Museum of forestry, hunting and fishery

Museum of forestry, hunting and fishing is located in Ohrada near of the village of Hluboka nad Vltavou, about 100 km from Prague. Museum is one of the oldest in Czech republic and the oldest of it's kind. There's also a zoo by the lodge.

History of the lodge

Hunting lodge Ohrada
Lodge for the hunters.

Museum is in old hunting lodge of Schwarzenberg family that was built in 1713. Baroque style building is designed by P.I.Bayer. First exhibition was built in 1842.

How to get there?

It's easy to make a day trip to the museum from tourist favored Prague. Train is a notable option, wich I also strongly recommend. Altough trains are from the soviet era, they are clean, not overcrowded and smoothly operating, so travelling is comfortable. Trains also run often.

After hectic coming and going in Prague it is pleasant to travel through peaceful and beautiful czech counryside. Landscapes are filled with quite low but steep hillsides and clefts, plants and strange looking buildings. Forests are mainly great variety of leafy trees with occasional conifereous mixture.

Train scheludes can be browsed in Czech railroad company's website www.vlak.cz. There's two possible routes by train from Prague to Hluboka nad Vltavou: either via Ceské Budejovice to main station of Hluboka or straight to station of Zamosti. Hluboka's station is easily within walkable distance from Ohrada (slightly over 1 km). Zamosti is quite far away, but this route have a nice walk through village to Hluboka and by Municky-pond to Ohrada (see map). There is also a buss route from Zamosti to Hluboka.

Note to those who walk: there's no road signs to Ohrada at least from Zamosti but Ohrada zoo -signs lead the way also to the museum.

Mansion is large and collections are quite extensive. In forestry area there are for example old tools and cuts from the giant logs. Fishery section consists of great collection of old fish traps, information about czech aquaculture history and prepared fishes.

The largest collection is about hunting. There is huge amount of trophys, prepared game, lots of old hunting weapons and traps (also self made-weapons of pouchers) and pretty weird whole furniture made of horn: chairs, tables and even chandelier.

There are own halls dedicated to a.o. furred and winged game. Special interest might be old pictures and drawings of past hunting. Also hunting dogs has teir own room. Old hunters' chapel is decorated and related to the museum.

At start one get a booklet about collections. There is many language alternatives available.

Overall interesting and recommendable museum.
