Brook trout is of North American origin. It's main colour is olive green or brownish. Stomach is light and on sides are light and red dots. Back is fairly striped. Like other Salvelinuses, brook trout has also white edges on it's abdominal fins.

Brook trouts have been experimentally put into Finnish waters in 1890s like rainbow trouts. Next time they were put to water in 1965, but rather poor results. However reproducing populations have been developed in some streams of southern Finland and also Kemijoki-watercourse.

Tolerant to acidity

Diverge from Finnish original salmon-species and rainbow trout, brook trout tolerates well water with acidity. It subsists even in pH 4,1 water. Also tolerance of cold is high.

Food taking

Brook trout is a resilient food taker. It accepts larvae of water fauna, bottom fauna and small fish.

Spawning

Brook trout spawns in autumn. Spawning takes place at gritty bottoms in flowing water. After spawning brook trouts usually stay in flowing water and wander to the lakes or to the sea not until spring.

Size, importance

Brook trout don't grow big. Yet ones weighting a kilo are rare. Anyhow brook trouts are considered good fighters with hook in their mouth, so it has a recreational value.

Finnish record brook trout is at the time of writing 2,73 kg and was caught from good brook trout stream Piehinkijoki river of Raahe.
